Last Thursday, during the Alpine World Ski Championships in Åre, the world’s first digitized district heating network was inaugurated by Jämtkraft CEO Erik Brandsma and Ngenic CEO Björn Berg. The Thermo-S ARE pilot project is run by Jämtkraft, Ngenic, and the Swedish Energy Agency, and aims to eliminate oil-fired heating during periods of high demand and to create a more resource-efficient and better-distributed district heating system.

The control system optimizes heat and saves energy for the properties connected to Åre’s district heating network, and all power—including hot water production—is measured via meters installed at all connection points in the network. Thanks to this project, Jämtkraft doesn’t need to build a storage tank to manage fluctuations in the network during the winter. Simply put, it’s both a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution!
The project will run for three years and is currently being tested manually; it will then be evaluated and automated so that it can begin permanent operation in 2020.
